Emergence and spread

1989, the CVS, as a further development of RCS and SCCS (Source Code Control System). The CVS uses the same format as RCS, able to demonstrate to the previous systems but at the same time as several files. The CVS is particularly in the development of open source projects to use - will, however, more and more replaced by modern systems. As a successor to the CVS is "subversion" as a system, which in CVS circumvent existing problems / would like to resolve. There are also other systems like "CVSNT" or "OpenCVS" that promise further improvements.
